During a recent two week stay in Taiwan, we drove down to Kenting from Taichung, which took just over three hours. Known for its beautiful beaches and natural parks, Kenting is located at the southern tip of Taiwan. It’s a great place for a tropical getaway. Even in December when we visited, the weather was still quite warm, upwards of 25-28 degrees Celsius. Here are five fun things to do in Kenting!

*Note that I travelled as a Mandarin-speaker with my cousins who can all read and write Chinese. Kenting is somewhat touristy, but I still recommend downloading a language app if you don’t speak Mandarin and being ready to use it.
BEACH HOP
There is no shortage of beautiful beaches in Kenting! We enjoyed Xiaowan Beach or Little Bay Beach, which was within walking distance from our hotel. Nanwan Beach (South Bay) was another favourite of ours, with soft white sand. Baishawan or White Sand Beach is perhaps one of the more well-known spots, known for being featured in the movie, Life of Pi.

SIGHTSEE ON ATVs
My cousins and I rented ATVs to explore the beautiful nature in Kenting. I found this to be a fun way to see the countryside and we drove through Chuhuo Special Scenic Area. We saw lots of water buffalos! You can book guided tours with local companies. Just note that this is one of the more adventurous things to do in Kenting, and not everyone may feel comfortable driving in rocky terrains.
STROLL THROUGH KENTING’S HERITAGE SITES
Many of Kenting’s areas are protected from development and you can definitely see and feel the rich history in the town. At Hengchun Old Town, you can find ancient ruins including city gates which are mostly open and available for the public to experience. Take a walk through Kenting’s old streets and take in the history.
EXPERIENCE KENTING’S WATER ACTIVITIES
More adventurous things to do in Kenting… At Kenting’s many beaches, you’ll also find beautiful blue water. Local tour companies offer water activities such as snorkelling, banana boating, jet skiing and much more. We did some boating at Nanwan Beach (South Bay), where many others were also participating in water activities.
EXPLORE KENTING’S NIGHT MARKET
Stretching over 2 kilometers, the Kenting Night Market offers many delicious street foods and fun games for all ages. We enjoyed shooting BB guns and playing traditional carnival games to win prizes. Though the Kenting Night Market is not as big as some of the famous night markets that Taiwan is known for, it’s still a great place to explore Taiwanese cuisine and enjoy some inexpensive shopping.

DISCOVER GUAN SHAN TEMPLE 高山巖福德宮
At the top of a hill you’ll an amazing viewpoint to see all of Kenting, but also Guan Shan Temple (高山巖福德宮) a Buddhist temple that is over 300 years old. I went with my cousins to light incense and pray, but even as an irreligious person you can admire the architecture and intricate details in the building.
