I was so impressed by the food in Amsterdam! The city has so many cool dining experiences and also amazing vegan offerings. Here are some of the standout restaurants in Amsterdam from our week-long trip.

HEARTH
Hearth is a unique restaurant and audio bar located in the Oude Pjip neighbourhood serving amazing vegan food. Some evenings there is a live DJ that plays music while you enjoy your meal. Their menu is inspired by various international cuisines, including Mexican, Italian and Japanese. The food is elevated without feeling pretentious. We enjoyed the aubergine gnocchi and the coconut charcoal ravioli.

MEDIAMATIC ETEN
We booked Mediamatic for the opportunity to dine in a mini greenhouse by the water. We tried their four-course vegan meal and the dishes were very unique and interesting. I will warn anyone who has extreme arachnophobia to consider dining indoors. We were told ahead of time that we might have some eight-legged visitors throughout our meal. Thankfully we had an amazing server who helped us gently remove multiple spiders during our dinner.

RESTAURANT DE KAS
Restaurant de Kas was by far our favourite dining experience in Amsterdam! This is one of the best restaurants in Amsterdam according to food experts. The restaurant’s slogan is “picked in the morning, served in the afternoon”. Many of the ingredients and herbs are grown on site in their garden and greenhouse. The restaurant space is absolutely stunning. We tried their four-course lunch menu with a side of oysters – the food was amazing!

FACTORY GIRL
We went to Factory Girl for brunch and were super impressed by the food! Factory Girl serves mostly plant based food, but they did have eggs as an option for some dishes. They actually had options for pretty much any allergy or diet, whether it was gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan. We had the shakshuka and rice noodle dishes – we were stuffed! The staff were so nice and saw us drooling over the neighbouring table’s vegan dessert and brought us some!

TREVIS
When I saw that Amsterdam had a vegan Italian restaurant serving truffle pasta, I was very excited! According to their website Trevis is the first restaurant in Amsterdam to serving 100% vegan authentic Italian cuisine. It’s a small homey restaurant that appeared to be staffed by only two people, which I loved! The ravioli with mushrooms and truffle cream was delicious. We subbed maccheroni with spaghetti for the pesto, which was equally delightful.

XIAN DELICIOUS FOODS EXPRESS
After a few days of dining out, we started feeling deprived of Asian food. After checking out the pride parade in Amsterdam, we went to Xian Delicious Foods Express for a quick, casual meal. The hand-pulled noodles were amazing! I was really surprised to find delicious Asian restaurants in Amsterdam. I’d actually be very happy with this meal even in Vancouver, where there are many top-notch Asian dining options. We talked about this meal for days after and how we wished we could go back.

FOODHALLEN
Foodhallen in Amsterdam reminds me of Time Out Market in Lisbon. It’s exactly what the name implies, a big food hall with lots of different options and vendors, including Japanese, Mexican, Vietnamese and French food. It was very busy when we went and there is limited seating. We opted for ramen and were able to secure a table shared with a German family. There was a live DJ playing loud music, which makes for an upbeat environment, but it was still family-friendly.

REM
REM is one of the more unique restaurants in Amsterdam. It used to be a pirate radio broadcasting station. There are three floors to this restaurant, including a bar and rooftop. We went on a very rainy day, but were still able to enjoy the views from the restaurant. This was a super fun restaurant and we indulged in the five course meal which was made dairy free to accommodate my allergy. I will say I definitely enjoyed the atmosphere and vibes more than the food, but I still think it’s worth a visit.
