You can’t visit Portugal without indulging in their iconic custard tarts, known as a pastel de nata (plural is pasteis de nata). So where can you find pasteis de nata in Lisbon? These delicious pastries can be found at almost every street corner, but not every store that sells pasteis de nata makes them fresh! Though we only had two and a half days in Lisbon, we were able to try pasteis de nata at five different pastelarias. Keep reading to find out where we had pasteis de nata in Lisbon…

FABRICA DA NATA
The pasteis da nata from Fabrica da Nata were my personal favourite. This was a pleasant surprise because Fabrica da Nata is in one of the more touristy shopping areas of Lisbon, so I was not expecting the pasteis to be so good! They were the perfect combination of salty and sweet, and the crust was very flaky and delicious. You can see the pasteis de nata being made fresh at their store front every day.
A BRASILEIRA
At over 100 years old, A Brasileira is one of the oldest and most well-known cafes in Lisbon. Located in the very chic Chiado neighbourhood, the café was very popular among famous Portuguese writers and artists throughout history. It’s worth a visit to take in the beautiful interior and history. We enjoyed A Brasileira’s pasteis de nata and noted that were very flaky with a saltier crust. It was served with cinnamon which added a very nice touch.
PASTELARIA SANTO ANTONIO
Winner of best pasteis da nata in Lisbon in 2019, Pastelaria Santo Antonio is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. The bakery has a prime location just steps away from the Castela Sao Jorge. San Antonio’s pasteis de natas was my boyfriend’s favourite. Their version was very flaky and delicious, but the bottom was a bit more on the sticky/tough side.
MANTEIGARIA AT TIME OUT MARKET
Located in the famous Time Out Market is the Manteigaria food stall. They claim to have the best pasteis de nata in Lisbon so we had to try it! We shared a box of six pasteis de nata with some friends and we all loved them. I would say that these were my second favourite of the five we tried, though they were on the sweeter side. Again, I was surprised how much I enjoyed it because of how touristy the market is, but the pasteis de nata were very well done.
VEGAN NATA
Yes, even vegans can indulge in pasteis de nata in Lisbon! Vegan Nata is a bakeshop that makes plant-based pasteis de nata can be found at two locations in Lisbon. We stumbled across their Chiado café while walking the streets of Lisbon and I was very curious how a vegan pastel de nata would taste. Of course the non-vegan version is much tastier, but this is a perfectly good option for anyone who may have allergies and/or dietary restrictions.
