We spent four days in Munich, the capital of Bavaria, and thoroughly enjoyed the food scene! Every meal we had was amazing. It’s a very diverse city with various cuisines and cultures. We were surprised by the number of vegan options too! Here are seven restaurants in Munich that we loved.
RESTAURANT ATHENE
We were craving Greek food one and chose Restaurant Athene for dinner based on the high reviews on Google. The Greek options in Vancouver are somewhat hit and miss, so we were very excited to try authentic Greek food in Europe. We dined there with friends and we were all blown away by the platters. The portions were huge and the meat was so flavourful and tender. I opted for the Santorini Platter that came with a souvlaki skewer, gyros, baby calamari and fried potatoes with tzatziki.

PRINZ MYSHKIN
Prinz Myshkin is an upscale vegetarian restaurant with an array of creative dishes. We dined there as a group of six and the servers were very accommodating. I enjoyed the vegan ravioli and my boyfriend loved the vegan mousse for dessert. As an upscale modern restaurant, Prinz Myshkin’s prices are on the higher end of the spectrum, but we were pleased to find that the portions were generous. This is a great spot for a date night. Reservations are highly recommended!

WIRTHAUS IN DER AU
You can’t visit Munich without trying traditional Bavarian food! Wirthaus in der Au is one of the oldest Bavarian alehouses in Munich, but it’s not just known for its beer. It also serves delicious Bavarian food, including knoedel (bread dumplings), schnitzel and schweinebraten. The restaurant is very popular, so I highly recommend booking a table in advance. Indoor seating is available in what looks like a traditional German beer house, as well as outdoor patio seating. Fun bonus: All of the servers dress in lederhosen.

AFGHAN CHOPAN
Afghan Chopan has multiple locations and their Elvirastrase restaurant was one of my boyfriend’s regular haunts when he lived in Munich. It’s a small restaurant serving Afghan food, with delicious rice dishes and sides. There are lots of vegetarian and vegan options available, but for meat eaters, the chicken and lamb are delectable. The food does not photograph well so my photos don’t do the restaurant justice, but trust me it’s worth a visit!

CAFÉ IGNAZ
This family-run vegetarian café has been operating in Munich for many years. Cafe Ignaz is another one of my boyfriend’s favourite restaurants from when he lived in Munich. There are lots of dairy-free (vegan) options available too. We enjoyed the spinatknoedel (not vegan as it came with parmesan), also known as a spinach dumpling, and gnocchi. The very generous and kind owners offered us a slice of cake for each main dish that we ordered.

MONO CAFÉ
We stumbled across this plant-based café in search of lunch while wandering around Munich. They had amazing lunch specials for 10 euro. It was great value for the generous portions we received. The special when we visited was a masala bowl with rice. Mono Café also has a variety of vegan desserts to choose from each day. We loved the chocolate donut.

MARY’S COFFEE CLUB
Mary’s Coffee Club is a trendy all-day breakfast and brunch spot with lots of health-conscious choices. We enjoyed their toasts and bowls, as well as their breakfast burger. The restaurant has multiple locations in Munich. We opted for the one in Maxvordstadt, near the very cute and Instagrammable university neighbourhood of Munich.
